ASQ Recognition: Dr. Sengupta Named a Fellow
Dr. Abhijit Sengupta, Ph.D
A federal employee, Sengupta has been awarded Fellow designation in recognition for sustained contributions in the theory and application of reliability and quality control in the nuclear power industry; for longtime service to ASQ certification process; for extensive publications in support of reliability-based thinking; and for continuous dedication to ASQ at local and division levels. An ASQ Fellow is an individual who has established record of contributions, both to the quality profession and to the Society. The grade Fellow is an earned distinction. Achievement of this status is a symbol of respect from ASQ colleagues that has been accepted by the highest officers of the ASQ organization. Dr. Sengupta was presented with his Fellow pin in conjunction with the 2018 World Conference of Quality in May 2018.
James C. Brown & Diane Brown presented the Distinguished Service Award
Jim has been a member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) Greater Detroit Section 1000 since 2008. He is a member of the Professional Development Committee. Additionally, Jim is a member on the newly founded Social Media team. Jim is an ASQ-Certified Software Quality Engineer and is currently employed as a Quality Assurance Manager at General Motors. Prior to that, he was a Senior Architect at Compuware Corporation, a Director at DST Health Solutions, a Quality Assurance Manager at CSC Healthcare and a Quality Assurance architect at IBM. Jim’s background includes Automotive, Healthcare, Operating Systems, and Gas Sales and Exchange IT. Jim has managed teams responsible for Quality Assurance, Software Development, Systems Administration, Customer Service and Professional Services.
Diane has been a member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) Greater Detroit Section 1000 since 2009. She is a member of the Professional Development Committee. Additionally, Diane is a member on the newly founded Social Media team. Diane is an ASQ-Certified Software Quality Engineer (CSQE). She is currently employed as a Senior Quality Assurance Analysis at SS&C. Prior to that, she was a Customer Service Representative for Health Care client with CSC Healthcare. Before joining the health care industry, Diane was an entrepreneur where she developed a Safety Inspection Program used in the automotive and education fields to perform safety inspections of their facilities to help comply with OSHA guidelines.
Jim has an MBA from University of Phoenix, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Wayne State, and a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics along with a Bachelor of Arts in Aeronautics-Mathematics from Miami University.
In addition to CSQE Diane holds a Fellow Academy for Healthcare Management (FAHM) through America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). Diane received a Bachelor of Business Science and Business Administration from Lawrence Technology University. She also received an associate degree of Computer Science from Henry Ford Community College.
Jim and Diane Brown co-authored an article together for the Greater Detroit Section Quality Herald titled “Where Our Recent Vacation Landed Us”. Both are avid sports fans, while attending a Brewers baseball game in Milwaukee, they discovered they were right in front of ASQ Headquarters. They were welcomed and received a wonderful tour! Jim along with his wife jokingly like to call themselves the “Quality Couple”!
Mary Hones Burr was presented with the annual Distinguished Service Award for her exemplary contributions to the Greater Detroit Section. This honor was presented at the ESD Gold Award Banquet, March 16, 2016. She presently serves as Secretary, and in the past has served as Vice-Chair and Treasurer.
Mary has been a member of the Detroit Section since 1998. She holds two ASQ certifications; Certified Quality Auditor (CQA), and Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence.
John Boulahanis, P.E. was presented with the annual Distinguished Service Award for his exemplary contributions to
Greater Detroit Section website/marketing (right). John is a member of ASQ Detroit Section Executive Committee where he serves as Marketing Chair, ESD & AIAG Liaison, and is a member of the Professional Development Committee. The honor was presented at the ESD Gold Award Banquet, March 11, 2015 at Schoolcraft College in Livonia
This year, the Gold Award was presented to Kush K. Shah. ASQ Greater Detroit Section nominated past Chair Kush Shah for ESD Gold Award, which subsequently passed a substantial and detailed application process, as well as a vote by the past ESD Affiliate Council Chairs. The Gold Award is the ESD Affiliate Council’s most prestigious distinction. This award is given to an individual who is collectively upheld by the council for his or her outstanding contributions to the fields of science and engineering.
Kush joins a legacy of outstanding engineers and technical professionals, as the 43rd recipient. This reflects very well for ASQ Greater Detroit Section and quality professionals. The last time a quality professional was recognized for this award was in 1982 – Dr. Hans Bajaria.

John W. Hall, long time ASQ Greater Detroit Section volunteer and Executive Committee member recently was presented with the Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding contributions to the Greater Detroit Section of ASQ. This award was presented to him at the recently held ESD Gold Banquet at the Troy Marriott.
John joined ASQ in 1990. He earned his CQE certification in 1991. He joined the Executive Committee in early 2008, working on web applications. John presently serves the Section most notably as Webmaster since 2009, and has championed our newly anticipated website with his team of experts. This new website will be introduced this spring. John also serves as Job Connection representative who posts job openings as well as resumes for those looking for job opportunities. He also is to be commended for sending out our regular weekly Tuesday email communications to members, keeping us all informed of upcoming events.
John, congratulations for your volunteerism, and a job consistently well done!
